New Bare Escentuals Oil Control Foundation Primer

For those of us with oiler and/or acne prone skin, Bare Escentuals has a new Oil Control Primer. The official name is Bare Escentuals Prime Time Oil Control and it is an oil-free, water based primer.

Here is the scoop from Bare Escentuals: “developed for oily, sensitive, or problem-prone skin to instantly smooth the complexion prior to bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation. The oil, fragrance, and silicone–free formula is clinically proven to control shine throughout the day, as well as to regulate oil and refine pores with minerals and natural plant extracts. The lightweight primer glides on seamlessly—leaving the skin matte, refreshed, and ready for foundation.”

Ingredients:
Water (Aqua), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Modified Corn Starch, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Zinc PCA, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Anisate, Silica, Calcium Silicate, Sclerotium Gum, Citric Acid.

It is currently a Sephora exclusive, where it is getting mixed, but mostly positive reviews. I am looking forward to trying it out, but my initial feeling is that anyone who has worn and can wear a primer with silicone will be disappointed in this one. This formula is for those of us who cannot use the silicone based primers because of breakouts or very oily skin. If you have normal to dry skin or can use the other primers with silicone, stick with them. Otherwise you may want to try this out – it is probably better than nothing if you want ot use a primer.

Philosophy the present is Philosophy’s makeup primer . They call it a “clear makeup” and it can be worn either under foundation as a primer or alone. This is the only primer that I have used regularly that I feel did not encourage my skin to breakout.

The philosophy supernatural primer is called Philosophy The Supernatural Poreless, Flawless and it has an SPF of 15.

It is a tinted makeup primer that can also be used alone as a tinted oil-free moisturizer. Like other primers, it will enhance the appearance by making it appear smoother and it will create a barrier between your skin (and skin care products) and your makeup. It will also diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles because the thick smooth formula fills them in. Because this one is tinted, it will also help to make your skin tone look smoother and more even.

Has Serious Skin Care outdone Bare Escentuals by making a “new and improved” Mineral Veil? Or is ir an alternative to Rare Minerals? Or is it a makeup primer? Or all of the above?

ProNano Brightening Powder debuted a few months ago. Since then it has received RAVE reviews by users – it is a customer pick on HSN. The instructions say to apply it before makeup – it is intended as a primer to minimize pores, reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, brighten the skin and keep it hydrated while absorbing oil. This is very appealing to me because regular makeup primers cause me to breakout, but because this one is a mineral based powder, I should be OK.

Because it contains cornstarch (a main ingredient in Bare Mineral’s Mineral Veil), people are also using it over their foundation as a setting powder and they seem to be happy with those results as well.

It also contains Emblica Fruit Extract: Natural (a fruit extract that has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, protects skin cells for anti-aging benefits, natural skin brightener) as a main ingredient – this is also a main ingredient in Rare Minerals and Strivectin.

I’m not sure I would have paid much attention to this product if it weren’t for all of the rave reviews (they are here if you want to read them - Serious Skin Care ProMinerals ProNano Brightening Powder) – but I am very intrigued and want to give it a try! I am out of Rare Minerals – which I love, but have a tough time coughing up $60 for it!, so I will try this instead. I am a big fan of Serious Skin Care ProMineral Foundation and have been wanting to get a kit for awhile – I found and ordered the kit pictured below, the powder is available as a separate item, I love the value of the Serious Skin Care kits! I will try it for a while and post a review.

I know many ladies with dry skin have been very frustrated in their mineral makeup adventures. For some users with dry skin their minerals dry out and they feel they are just caked on – even after using lots of moisturizer before applying. It looks like help has arrived in the form of Serious SKin Care’s Olive Oil primer for dry skin. I noticed this over on HSN and found both the primer and primer and Prominerals have received so many positive reviews they are “customer picks”.

Urban Decay Primer Potion vs. Bare Escentuals Prime Time Eyelid Primer

While I do not use it everyday, I am a HUGE fan of Urban Decay’s Eyelid Primer Potion. It is an awesome product and it does and incredible job of keeping your eye makeup in place until you take it off. When I saw that Bare Escentual’s has a new eyelid / eye makeup primer I wondered how is it different from the Urban Decay product and how could it possibly be any better?
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion comes in an adorable Genie bottle in a wonderful purple color – it is too cute for words! The draw back is that at least half of the product gets trapped in the container & you have to pry off the end to have access to all of the product.

It is $16 for 10 ml or 0.34 ounce.

The ingredients are: Isododecane, Talc, Cyclopentasiloxane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Trihydroxystearin, Triethylhexanoin, Isopropyl Lanolate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, VP/Eicosene Copolymer, Dimethicone, PEG-40 Stearate, Propylene Carbonate, Phenoxyethanol, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Methicone, Isobutylparaben
May Contain: Mica, CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), CI 77163 (Bismuth Oxychloride)

Bare Escentuals bareVitamins Prime Time Eyelid Primer doesn’t have the cuteness – but it does look very functional – with it’s felt tip pen type design.

It is $16 for 15 ml or 0.5 ounce.

The ingredients are: Isododecane, Barium Sulfate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Glyceryl Triethylhexanoate, Polyethylene, Trihydroxystearin, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, VP/Eicosene Copolymer, Propylene Carbonate, Dimethicone, Beeswax (Cera Alba), PEG-40 Stearate, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491), Iron Oxides (CI 77492), Iron Oxides (CI 77499), Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163).

As you can see from the ingredients in bold, the two formulas seem to be very similar. The Bare Escentuals version has added vitamins, but I am unsure if they would benefit the eyelid in any way. The Bare Escentuals version is also less expensive – provided you can get all of the product out of the container. Urban Decay Primer Potion costs the equivalent of $47 per ounce and Bare Escentuals Eyelid Primer is the equivalent of $32 per ounce. (It seems like you don’t get very much product – but you use such a tiny amount it lasts a really long time.)

It looks to me like it would be a smart thing to do to try out the Bare Escentuals Primer when I run out of Urban Decay Primer Potions, but I sure am going to miss my little Genie Bottle!!
